Trauma
Many struggling with trauma feel unsafe in most situations/environments, and become hypervigilant with high levels of anxiety/panic attacks.
They often experience impaired interpersonal relationships/friendships, due to unhealthy attachment styles including codependency, avoidant behaviors, hyper independence, and people pleasing behaviors.
Often there is a difficulty trusting people and their intentions/motives, and a difficulty regulating one’s emotions, and experiencing overwhelming emotions with frequent anger outbursts.
Negative views of self, low self-esteem, deep sense of shame, feelings of not being good enough, are also common challenges of past trauma. This often manifests in perfectionism and a struggle with imposter syndrome.
To deal with the negative symptoms, utilizing unhealthy coping mechanisms and numbing their pain through substances, dissociation, eating disorders, and other addictive behaviors (ie. sex, porn, love, shopping, games, gambling, etc.), are common.
Someone struggling with past trauma also has the tendency to internalize events and situations, and point the blame towards self, often finding fault in oneself as a reflection of their character, personality, and as an individual.
Specialization in religious/church trauma involves addressing negative experiences related to one’s faith, often stemming from exposure to fear-based, shame-based, and harsh doctrines. These doctrines can significantly distort an individual’s view of themselves and the world, particularly concerning their sexual identity and orientation, leading to frequent repression and judgment of their true identity.
I am trained in EMDR to effectively address trauma symptoms and behaviors and target specifically attachment wounds associated with complex trauma through memory reprocessing, as well as Resourcing and guided imagery that focuses on somatic processing and releasing of trauma.
I utilize a psychodynamic approach to delve deeper into family history and background to enhance client’s insight and understanding of how their past has impacted their present self.
I also utilize ACT to strengthen healthy emotional regulation through cognitive distancing, radical acceptance, mindfulness exercises and focus on the present moment, empowering the client to adapt a different lens of their trauma, and emphasizing a value-driven life despite whatever difficulty or pain life may bring.
